Metz, France’s technical/progressive death metal quartet CATALYST today delivers another new video in the form of the title track from their recently released second LP, A Different Painting For A New World, out now on Non Serviam Records.
The original story of The Catalyst, a vital core character of the band’s concept, is here delivered through ten brand new tracks that push CATALYST’s sound to new levels of technical prowess. The hour-long A Different Painting For A New World is a diverse, enigmatic, and epic album which consumes the listener with uncompromising ferocity powerful enough to tear a hole in the sky.
The drums for A Different Painting For A New World were recorded at Boundless Productions Studio with engineers Flavien Morel and Clément Denys and performed by former drummer Paul Loup who has since been replaced by Stéphane Petit. The rest of the instruments were recorded by the band’s guitarist/vocalist Jules Kicka, bassist/backing vocalist Jefferson Brand, and guitarist/backing vocalist Florian Iochem, after which the tracks were mixed and mastered by HK Krauss at Vamacara Studio (Loudblast, Sinsaneum, Dagoba). The artistic direction of the album’s impressive cover was entrusted to Vincent Fouquet from Above Chaos (Meshuggah, Moonsorrow, Kataklysm), highlighting the battle between The Creator and The Catalyst, illustrating several tracks of the album, with photography from Mathieu Ferrera.
The new video for “A Different Painting For A New World” was directed and edited by Mederic Havard. With its debut, CATALYST reveals, “We’re beyond thrilled to share with you our biggest work to date regarding our music videos, with the eponymous track ‘A Different Painting For A New World!’ Being the last song on this new offering, ‘A Different Painting For A New World’ closes the curtain on this extreme death metal journey the listener cruised through on our new album.
“Directed exclusively by Mederic Havard, we tried to come up with something different from what we’ve done in the past. In this dark ambient landscape, we tried to develop the idea of a void that the character can’t escape. It fully matches the end of the story written by the band, this song being the ending point of the chapter narrated throughout this album. A fragmented body is the lone legacy of a world that was, venturing through an ocean of darkness only the viewer can witness, a bewildered fall dragging you in the deepest and blackest parts of this shattered place.
“Forever muted and forever gone. An erratic fate to confront, devoid of a perfection that was once a purpose”

“It pushes the boundaries of both classic and progressive death metal, at the same time creating something new and all its own.” – Decibel Magazine
“…this isn’t the kind of hyper-dexterous tech-death that can tend to numb the senses, but rather the kind of boisterously exuberant experience that seizes attention and holds it. Apart from the sudden rhythmic breaks and tempo changes, lots of the darting riffs and blistering drum progressions are catchy as well as eye-popping.” – No Clean Singing
“…this is a dense and eclectic work of art that draws from bands old and new. Combining and bridging the gap between all that is super sweep picking and tapping focused, serpentine-like melody-driven, absurdly brutal-minded, and delightfully prog-death-infused strains of tech-death.” – Metal Injection
“The similarities to prog-tech stalwarts like Death and Obscura remain in tact, but there’s also a lot more emphasis on brutality and groove this time around, along with added symphonic and folk-sounding sections…” – Heavy Blog Is Heavy
“A heavy slab of progressive and technical mastery, brutal vocal delivery with occasional gang vocals, and a heaping helping of guitar AND bass solos. I am also quite fond of the mixing/mastering which is beautifully illustrated by those sensuous bass notes clearly audible among the furious guitar riffs and double bass drums.” – Toilet Ov Hell
