The Circle Pit is hosting a premiere of Quebec City-based sextet APES‘ new lyric video for “Bottom Feeder.” The song is found on the band’s second LP, Penitence, out today on Secret Swarm Records.

APES’ Penitence delivers eight ravenously heavy and dark tracks that will immerse listeners in an unmistakable sense of impending doom. Skillfully weaving through various nuances of grimness, Penitence unquestionably solidifies APES’ position as influential figures in Canadian extreme music.

Penitence was recorded by Marc-Antoine Desjardins and Raphael Malenfant at Broil Audiomixed by Andy Nelson at Bricktop Recording, and mastered by Will Putney at Graphic Nature Audio. Artwork was created by the band’s Alexandre Goulet of Goule x Design.

APES’ new video for “Bottom Feeder” arrives alongside the official release of Penitence today. Vocalist Alexandre Goulet declares, “We’re thrilled to unveil our new video for ‘Bottom Feeder.’ The song is atmospheric, exuding raw power and intensity as it delves into the theme of confronting the haunting echoes of past mistakes. Its ethereal riffs make it stand apart from our previous releases—yet it seamlessly ties into the overarching themes of our new album, Penitence. We’re eager for listeners to immerse themselves in the darkness and energy that we’ve channeled into this track and bang their heads on the finale!”

Forged in the early 2010s, APES is renowned for their distinctive fusion of grindcore, black metal, and hardcore. The band was conceived with a singular purpose: to craft heavy and unapologetically relentless music, breaking down all barriers in their path. Their merciless sound, coupled with intense live performances alongside notable acts such as Full Of Hell, Cattle Decapitation, Nails, and Unearth, positioned them as an indispensable force within the Canadian extreme music scene. After releasing a series of EPs and their debut full-length album, Lightless, in 2017, APES joined forces with Translation Loss in 2022 to release Lullabies For Eternal Sleep, a widely acclaimed EP that further explores the blending of extreme genres.

“Before the full song even kicks in, you’re gonna get a sense of the sheer auditory weight thanks to that devastating guitar tone and equally spacious drum tone. It’s all beefy.” — Metal Injection on “The Great Fire”

“Penitence showcases an evolved APES. Keeping their core of blistering blackened grindcore intact, while adding in a layer of melody and atmosphere is inspired. This is the apex of the APES experience so far. I had high hopes for Penitence based on the band’s past work, but this has exceeded my expectations.” — Wonderbox Metal

“The black metal influences are more pronounced on Penitence, which is compounded by a trio of guitarists aiming to stack contemptuous riffs on top of each other. As has been the case since their inception, APES know that time is precious, so this album is in and out in under 25 minutes. Within that quick span, the band shows no leeway to anyone courageous enough to enter.” — Heavy Music HQ

“Penitence feels like APES have managed to prove themselves as a band. They’ve taken the early promise of their blackened grindcore sound and found a way to elevate it, to showcase all that they are and all they can become. The end result is an album that is exciting, dynamic and hints at bold new directions, not just for Apes, but for grindcore as a whole.” — Two Guys Metal Reviews

“…eight incredibly hard-hitting songs that deliver a beautiful melting pot of musical styles, unique to them in what you could describe as short but wonderful stabs of noise.” — Metal Epidemic

“…a short, hard-hitting metal set that will get your blood up.” — Flying Fiddlesticks
