New York’s GRIDFAILURE unveils a new album, When The Lights Go Out Vol. IV, as a free download for Halloween.

Lower Hudson/NYC-based GRIDFAILURE is the audiovisual entity David Brenner, yielding dense, tension-filled output, with elements of dark ambient and dark hardcore, infused with jazz, world music, folk, harsh noise, electronica, punk, and more. Operating solo or with a cast of collaborators, the project has amassed dozens of independent releases, including collaborative albums, splits, and more.

With three years having passed since the prior installment, the fourth volume of the When The Lights Go Out continues the series’ tradition of delivering movements that are less confrontational, annihilating, and conceptually apocalyptic than the standard GRIDFAILURE output, instead, focusing on droning atmospheres and hair-raising filmic auras, taking inspiration from classic horror cinema and literature.

GRIDFAILURE’s When The Lights Go Out Vol. IV sees creator David Brenner experimenting with tones created with acoustic-electric guitar, bass, keys/synths, pedals/effects, field recordings, minimalist vocals, and more, while handling the primary recordings, all mixing, photography, design, and cover art, and the record was mastered by Dan Emery/Black Matter Mastering. The record also features contributions from platinum jazz/rock recording artist Mac Gollehon (Onyx, Blondie, Duran Duran, David Bowie, GRIDFAILURE-live), Leila Abdul-Rauf (Vastum, Ionophore), Dan Emery (Thetan), Benjamin Levitt (Megalophobe, GRIDFAILURE-live), Liz Ciavarella-Brenner, Natasha Padilla, and Rob Levitt.
