Chapel Hill, North Carolina doom trio, BLACK SKIES, will celebrate five years of turned-up and tuned-down psychedelic sludge at the Nightlight (405 1/2 West Rosemary St. Chapel Hill, North Carolina) on Friday, November 5 with Cough and Resister. To celebrate, BLACK SKIES will be giving away a free copy of Hexagon on CD to the first 55 people paid through the door. The cover is only $5. All Ages. 9:30pm.
Founding members Kevin Clark and Michelle Temple were joined by ex-Des Ark drummer Tim Herzog earlier this summer and are currently preparing for upcoming recording sessions. Throughout mid/late November, they will be heading to RJS Studios in Athens, Georgia to record with Kyle Spence of Harvey Milk. Said Clark of the upcoming recording: “We plan to go in with seven or eight songs and take whatever comes out best and fits well in the overall context of the record. It will be a mix of current songs, brand new ideas, and even some older songs that were never recorded. That said, people probably shouldn’t expect another Hexagon. There have been a ton of changes since that record, and it will show. Michelle has taken on a much more active role with vocals, Kevin started using pedals to add more dimension to the guitars, Tim brings a massive and naturally fitting drumming style and sound, and the songs tend to be written in a much less straight-forward manner than previous efforts. We have a few local and regional shows prior to recording that will all be in venues we’ve never played before. These shows will give us a good chance to test a lot of the material we’re considering for the album.
Following the recording, the band will head out in early December for another round of regional dates with U.S. Christmas before taking most of December and January off. BLACK SKIES have had their share of ups and downs over the past five years; the “ups” being two full US tours, numerous regional tours, a trip to SXSW in 2009, a self-titled, self-released demo, the release of Hexagon on I’m Better Than Everyone Records, a vinyl 7-inch and live tape released on Sirena Discos and countless shows with like-minded, talented bands. “We’ve played with a lot of great bands and met a lot of awesome souls with a true love and hunger for music. Those people are a big part of the drive for us to continue doing what we love to do, and we are eternally grateful for them.”
