“There is a fierce, pummeling side to CONTRARIAN that is effectively balanced by more progressive and atmospheric moments. There are also some elements that will appeal to fans of bands like Atheist and Cynic in their technicality.” – Dead Rhetoric
Otherworldly technical death metal subdivision, CONTRARIAN – which unites members of Nile, Sulaco, Mithras, Goemagot, Delirium Endeavor and others – will drop the pulverizing bounty of its Polemic full-length upon the masses tomorrow via Willowtip Records.
In advance of its release, Revolver Magazine is streaming the record in its multifaceted entirety at THIS LOCATION.
A transnational recording, the eight track Polemic was captured at Watchmen Studios (USA), Dreaming Studios (UK) and Soundtrap Studios (Greece) with all mixing and mastering manned by guitarist Leon Macey (Mithras) at Dreaming Studios and offers up a sonic smorgasbord of original and authentic death metal riffs, layered with brow-raising solo work and pummeling percussion. Most easily described as “progressive,” and “avant-garde,” CONTRARIAN manifests a forward-thinking, layered sound that is perpetually shape shifting yet fluid and engrossing. Not to be misconstrued as senseless noodling, the tech savvy collective delves into latter-day, Schuldinerian-style riffage, with atmospheric variations proving a wholly enticing listen to all those willing to take in its eccentricity.
In a 4/5 review Skulls ‘N’ Bones notes, “CONTRARIAN may have a death metal heart, but they balance it with a progressive mind. Polemic is a true display of that mind and heart coalescing into something fresh and exciting.” Dead Rhetoric agrees issuing in an 8/10 score, “There is a fierce, pummeling side to CONTRARIAN that is effectively balanced by more progressive and atmospheric moments. There are also some elements that will appeal to fans of bands like Atheist and Cynic in their technicality,” the acclaimed blog lauding, “a well-written and performed piece of death metal.” Adds Heavy Blog Is Heavy of the band’s “Need For Apathy” single specifically, “You have elements of doom, tech death, atmospheric death, and slam in one song. It’s a great song that really takes a mish mash of sounds that shouldn’t work, work together really well.”
Polemic is the forthcoming debut from progressive/avant-garde death metal unit, CONTRARIAN. Featuring within their ranks the musical prowess of drummer George Kollias (Nile), guitarists Brian Mason (Sulaco) and Leon Macey (Mithras) and vocalist Cody McConnell (Goemagot), alongside guitarist Jim Tasikas and bassist Ed Paulsen, both from the New York-based progressive metal fusion act Delirium Endeavor, Polemic will see release on CD and digitally via Willowtip Records TOMORROW November 20th, 2015.
