Entrenched In Hell, the devastating debut full-length from Oakland-based sludge metal/crust punk trio DEADFORM, featuring former members of Laudanum, Stormcrow, and Dystopia, is currently streaming in its entirety. The premiere comes in advance of the record’s official release this Friday, October 25th via Tankcrimes.
Entrenched In Hell emerges as a critical fusion of sludge metal and crust punk that comprises and compliments the previous projects of its three members. The six-track offering follows their 2022 self-titled demo with themes of war, cults, famine, and mortality that evoke a more personal attachment to the subject matter. With Entrenched In Hell a convergence of seemingly incompatible genres has become greater than the sum of its parts. Those parts are heavy, chugging, and drenched in distortion while still allowing the music to breathe, showcasing the decades of songwriting experience shared by the trio. Is it Crust? Is it Metal? Is it Punk? Though difficult to neatly categorize, DEADFORM is undeniably Oakland to their core.
Gushes Last Rites in part, “…instead of opting for the route so many other seasoned vets in this sphere waltz down these days — desperately gripping a valued name and infusing fresh blood via a couple hired young guns — they have decided to convene under a new banner with just themselves to draw inspiration from their previous primary endeavors: Dystopia, Stormcrow, and Laudanum. The result? Surprise! A sludgy form of crusty metal that… does not sound like it’s made by tired old men, but it absolutely does throw double middle fingers to most anything that might be considered ‘modern’ for our genre today… the band’s crux is built on a near lifetime spent hurling thick noise in oily underground clubs in front of modest, highly perspired crowds, and that comes through inside these very tidy thirty minutes, as every song has that erupting ‘live in the studio’ feel where punchy drums, grëëëaaazy bass, and a satisfyingly turbulent and (perhaps surprisingly) chunky guitar regularly get punctured by craggy, cantankerous barking. It’s a fairly straightforward affair, too, but DEADFORM does a great job of dressing the corners with an extension of Laudanum’s regular use of noise/industrial elements that lend a dark and distinct Killing Joke/Godfleshy feel to the album’s underbelly.”
Adds No Clean Singing, “This album shows you do not need a big-name producer or million-dollar studio to capture a great-sounding album that hits you with the weight of their live sounds while retaining the larger-than-life studio atmosphere. The guitar tones are sick as hell, but not overproduced by any stretch… This is well-written and executed, the mood is dismal and real. If you are a Dystopia fan this is more metallic in its intentions but comes from a similar place, so you will not be disappointed…a pretty flawless piece of crust metal that is subversive enough to win over punk and metalheads in equal measure.”
