Maryland doom metal quartet GATEWAY TO HELL will issue their debut EP, Clovers, through Unholy Anarchy Records, and Decibel is helping advance the unleashing of the bruising release in its entirety.
Offers the band of their early unfurling of Clovers, “”Most of the songs we write are based around inside jokes that eventually snowball into a twisted story backed by catchy riffs. For instance, the title track started out as a reference to an episode of the show Revie”, where the main character has to go to jail with their imaginary friend named Clovers. From that joke, the song morphed into a reflection of the masks we wear to impress others, whether that be an uneasy performer onstage or an overwhelmed friend going through the motions of life. Clovers is equally inspired by the life of Paul Stanley and your average childhood imaginary friend – both burdened to live up to the expectations of others in the face of the grim realities of life. Musically, we wanted to conjure the quiet before the show followed by the rush as the curtains get pulled. By the time the solo rolls around, you’re comfortable in your groove and have finally become the anticipated entertainment of the night. At the end of the song, the show’s over, and you’re left alone with your insecurities.”

The five bottom-heavy ragers comprising Clovers were captured at Developing Nations with Kevin Bernsten on their home turf and douses its listeners with heavy riffs, an exceptional vocal attack, and sheer, unrepentant catchiness. The Baltimore four-piece conjures loud music about things that matter. Whether it’s a slow burning, existential lament or a fast-paced scorcher about regrettable, late-night, drunken food orgies, GATEWAY TO HELL, fittingly self-described as a, “groovy, ghoulish mix of doom metal and the laughter of ugly children, with a touch of inebriation and shame,” draws influences from all over the musical spectrum including Deep Purple, Danzig, and of course, Black Sabbath.
The Obelisk issues of GATEWAY TO HELL‘s Clovers, “From the start of the opening title-track, GATEWAY TO HELL demonstrate a keen sonic blend somewhere between trad metal, doom, burly Southern heavy and – because why not? – sludge, but the material comes tied together through a steady purpose of songcraft and structure, and goes out of its way to create an album-style flow…” Skulls And Bones posted a 5/5 review of the EP, “this album is so full of heavy, bluesy, doomy metal with vocals that will make your naughty bits tingle!” Adds Echoing Magazine, “Combining the overly fuzzy guitar and emotion of Goatsnake, the groove elements and delivery of early-’90s Rollins Band, and vocals which have a definite Glenn Danzig feel, the debut EP Clovers from GATEWAY TO HELL is a release which will move your body with its bent of grim-metal.”
