Head over to Pitchfork.com for an earful of grisly doom from legendary Portland misery bringers, GRAVES AT SEA.
Titled “Betting On Black,” the latest canticle serves as the opening number of the band’s upcoming split with Cape Fear riff-wielders, Sourvein.
Relays Pitchfork of the tune, “‘Betting On Black’ leads off the split and shows that [GRAVES AT SEA] haven’t changed a bit… They still stretch out Grief-like sludge, and Nathan Misterek’s vocals still have that raspy black metal tinge to them. It’s got that earthy misery that you want from sludge, pain born from bad breakups and worse whiskey hangovers. GRAVES AT SEA also sound revitalized with the addition of bassist Jeff McGaritty and drummer Bryan Sours. Boogie to these blackened rhythms.”

Uniting in sound, mind and feedback-addled spirit, the GRAVES AT SEA/SOURVEIN split will be unleashed via Seventh Rule Recordings later this month. GRAVES AT SEA, whose contributions leave an eerie aura complete with tortured vocals, foreboding composition, and a general sense of dread, occupy Side A. Recorded by Billy Anderson, (Melvins, Sleep, Neurosis) “Betting On Black” and “Confession” finds the all-consuming sludge for which the band is notorious, flooding in amongst the tortured howls and shrieks of vocalist Nathan Misterek. SOURVEIN, who’ve now existed for two decades of distortion, damage and unrepentent doom, solidify Side B. With three songs produced and recorded by Mike Dean of Corrosion of Conformity, these odes of heavy combine toxic riffs, grooves and just the right amount of psychedelic appeal.
Both sides were mastered by Brad Boatright (Sleep, Beastmilk, Nails) at Audiosiege Engineering and will be released on both CD and LP on May 13th, 2014, prior to their appearances at this year’s edition of the Maryland Deathfest. The first pressing of the LP will be limited to 1000 copies and come available on 160-gram black wax with an included download code. Recommended for fans of Eyehategod, Black Sabbath, Electric Wizard, and all things loud and fuzzy.
Preorders are currently available at THIS LOCATION.
“Any fan of stoner or doom metal should break out the paraphernalia for this one, because it covers all the bases.” – Cvlt Nation
“These bands are to one another both kin and complement, as the sounds thumb a parallel helix yet manage to separate themselves from one another just enough. But that’s hardly the success here. Each song on either side serves as its own showcase of a band intent on keeping too many false smiles from polluting our planet. This split simply crushes from either side of the wax. It’s a tad bright outside for my squints to adjust, so I’m gonna sit here in my basement, blast this staggering marriage of dissonance and harmony, and wait for the fuzz to pound my front door.” — HeavyPlanet
