Today, avant/jazz-infused instrumental unit, ODD CIRCUS, is pleased to release a special cover of “Siriustar,” by San Francisco indie rock group, Deerhoof. The single follows the band’s DEUS offering, the closing chapter of a trio of EPs released independently last month via the band’s own Good Idea Music.
Performed live in-studio, ODD CIRCUS’ rendition of “Siriustar” was recorded by the band, mixed by Crews Carter and ODD CIRCUS, and mastered by Joseph Carra at Crystal Mastering (Melbourne, Australia).
“Siriustar” comes off Deerhoof’s 2005-released The Runners Four full-length. Comments drummer Partin Whitaker, “Rarely does a band come along so awash in electrical whimsy and propulsive, often chaotic joy as Deerhoof. We at ODD CIRCUS have done our level best to absorb and redistribute those vibes on our cover of their rocket-seesaw of a song, ‘Siriustar.'”
Adds saxophonist Graham Robertson, “Greg Saunier’s relentless commitment to style brings me so much joy and inspiration. It thrilled me to no end to hear our drummer Partin in the Saunier seat and playing Satomi Matsuzaki’s playful melodies against that drum energy, it makes you realize why Deerhoof is such a brilliant band.”

Composed of Robertson, Whitaker, and bassist Crews Carter, ODD CIRCUS debuted its first release Lunatic Children in 2019 and soon amassed a cult following. The band re-entered the studio in July 2020 and kicked off the first of a series of releases from these sessions in April 2021 with Mantha — a bold, six-track EP imagining aural visitations from supernatural creatures — followed in June by Arch Nova — a post-apocalyptic-themed release mixing heavy improvisation with more expansive psychedelia. August 2022 saw the release of DEUS, rounding out the EP trilogy with a demented sonic plunge into sociopathic vices. Commented the band, “Each track captures a character consumed and driven to ruin by their sociopathic vice. We imagine the album as creating a kind of spiritual prison for these lost souls, as they are now forced to reckon with their toxic behavior.” Together, the EPs attempt to blaze an original path in the world of improvised music.
ODD CIRCUS explores the suspension of space and time. Forged in improvisation, the band’s music navigates boundary-less sonic terrain that embraces the unknown and welcomes the unique and peculiar. The result is an experimental style of psychedelic art-rock that careens its way into garage, fusion, krautrock, no wave, post-rock, noise, hard psych, and sci-fi prog.
