This Friday, August 30th, Danish black metal-combo ORM will release their second album Ir, an ambitious piece of art meditating on loss and contingency from a mythological perspective. Until now, the band has released two live sessions with music from the album, but with the album nearing its release this week, ORM unleashes sound from the record itself with five minutes from the second of the album’s two compositions, “Bær Solen Ud.”
ORM‘s Ir consists of two twenty-plus-minute-long compositions – “Klippens Lyse Hal” (“The Bright Hall Of the Cliff”) and “Bær Solen Ud” (“Carry Out the Sun”) – which fully unfold the potential of the ambitious quartet. The album is produced by the band’s guitarist and singer Simon Sonne Andersen, and the band has also overseen the shaping of the artwork.
Andersen states about Ir and its creation, “This record means something very special to us, as we’ve been in control 100% during the process. From idea to finished master, there hasn’t been one single phase, in which we haven’t been the key mover, and it feels completely right. Ir has taken two-and-a-half years to create, and we did not want to compromise on anything this time, and to avoid compromise, you must do it yourself.”
Over the past several weeks, ORM has released two excerpts from the album; not direct studio clips from the album itself, but sound and vision from a recent live session recorded in Black Tornado Studios, Copenhagen, in cooperation with filmmakers Bjørn Patterson and Anders Dahl. Now at last, it is possible to hear sounds from the record as a five-minute excerpt from its B-side composition has been made available.

Ir will be released on vinyl, cassette, and digital formats through Indisciplinarian this Friday, August 30th. The vinyl version is pressed in runs of 400 copies on black vinyl and 100 on white, both with a beautiful gatefold with a booklet, and the cassette version comes in 150 white copies in a slipcase. ORM (Danish for “serpent”) assumed form in 2015, and in 2017, the band released its first and eponymous album which arose with its mythical tales of man and nature accompanied by a grandiose, melodic yet raw and direct black metal. The next chapter of ORM‘s history is Ir, where the contrasts are bigger, the complex is more complex, the simple simpler, and the melodies are poignant and contagious. The form is elongated, dynamic, and adventurous, and the musical ambition and performance bears witness to an ensemble void of compromise and led solely by its own flame, wherever it may lead. The album’s narration revolves around the impermanence of all things and is a personal reflection on how this aspect is contained within the human drama, religion, and nature.
