As Nashville powerviolence duo THETAN prepares for the release of their Dim Times EP through Anti-Corporate Music in May, today, No Echo is hosting a premiere of the band’s cover of the Wiper’s “D7.”
Since 2011, THETAN has produced an arsenal of LPs, EPs, splits, and collaborations, including their Space Goretex collaboration with Bronx rapper Kool Keith (with guests from Gwar, Three 6 Mafia, Dwarves, Lost Dog Street Band, and more), the “Based Serenade” single with Lil B, and more over the past few y ears. For Record Store Day 2023 this past weekend, they released their new collaboration, having provided the backing music for a new Record Store Day etched 12” single with the legendary NYC hip-hop outfit Ultramagnetic MC’s.
While THETAN is currently putting the final touches on their new LP for release later this year, the band presents a succinct new EP, Dim Times. Collecting several new and previously unreleased tracks, re-recorded songs, covers of The Dwarves and Wipers, and more, the EP drops six tracks in under ten minutes. Additionally, an expansive CD version of the record features over forty bonus tracks, including nearly all the band’s vinyl-only split and compilation tracks, demos, and more, all remixed and remastered for this release. Bassist/vocalist Dan Emery handled all engineering, mixing, and mastering duties at his Anti-Corporate Music/Black Matter Mastering headquarters in Nashville, and the Dim Times cover art was handled by Ericka Poore.
The new preview of Dim Times comes in the form of THETAN’s cover of Wipers’ “D7.” No Echo writes alongside their premiere of the cover, “The Nashville-based duo have built up an impressive discography of releases including LPs, EPs, splits, and unique collaborations, including Space Goretex with iconic rapper Kool Keith. Just last week, THETAN backed Keith’s group, Ultramagnetic MC’s, on a Record Store Day etched 12-inch single. Pretty gnarly.”
Emery writes, “This song has been important to me personally since I was a teenager. I’ve always loved how hauntingly it creeps along. It’s been on my to-do list of songs that I’ve wanted to cover for years. When we set out to do this EP, we didn’t have any real intention of recording it. We’d never even played it together. It was a pretty spur of the moment thing. We basically plotted out the arrangement and ran through it three times, picking the best take (number 2). My son has gotten into music and had also become familiar with the song after hearing the Nirvana version of it. When we recorded it, I kept it a secret from him until it was mixed. Surprisingly to me, he likes it. I successfully impressed an eleven-year-old. I don’t give a shit if anyone else likes it.”
THETAN’s cover of Wipers’ “D7” is now playing at No Echo RIGHT HERE.
Anti-Corporate Music will release Dim Times on May 19th. Find preorders at the label webshop HERE and Bandcamp where the title track is playing HERE, and find digital presaves HERE.
