Swedish black metal legion WATAIN continue to pillage their way across North America in support of their latest release of unholiness, Lawless Darkness. The tour, featuring support from Goatwhore and Black Anvil, commenced on November 6th in Pittsburgh and has since been winding its way across the U.S., with the band’s unsettling ritualistic stage performance — complete with candles and the scent of decay — reaping praise from devout fans and recent converts in every city they defile. “A WATAIN show is a religious ceremony, a time for the band to pay homage to their Gods. The theatrics and evil imagery, the dousing of themselves in (real) animal blood, and all of [Erik] Danielsson’s philosophies on rejecting humanity for nothingness is their way of grasping at their own liberation” — Portland Mercury
“Black metal bands seem to take pride in obfuscation: devising incomprehensible logos, concealing their faces with corpsepaint, releasing tiny-edition cassette tapes you can’t find even in the most obscurity-worshipping record shops. In a more strictly musical sense that means that you rarely find black-metal bands that play like WATAIN –heavy and dense but crisply defined. These scarily earnest Swedes summon a convincingly menacing thunder that doesn’t blur out of focus…” — The Chicago Reader
